In our personal development workshops for girls and women, we deal a lot with issues of personal acceptance and self-esteem. Being female in today's Western society comes with challenges to the personal self as girls and women in our media-saturated culture are bombarded with negative images and stereotypes through television, advertising, magazines and music.

Studies have shown that the onslaught of these messages- which glorify such things as beauty and body obsession, sex, and violence against women- undermine personal self-worth and esteem to the point where most girls suffer diminished self- esteem somewhere in that transition from childhood to teen-age, while boys do not.

We use the message of the abalone shell in our works, to celebrate what's unique about the individual. Just as each shell has been created with its own unique outer design- no two are exactly alike-so has each girl and woman been uniquely and beautifully designed -each to fulfill her own specific purpose and destiny. The iridescent beauty of the inside of the shell, speaks to inner beauty each possesses and, by choice, develops.
